Goal:
To support local farmers (and have a personal relationship, if possible).
To be mindful to eat more seasonally, and as organically as possible.
To be aware of “sustainability” and origin of food when making food choices.
To stay attuned to legislation that affects our farmers and our food sources.

How do I become a member and how does it work?
Contact Donna Jordan
or (386) 441-2776. The only requirement is willingness to work the veggie table at pick-up time about once a year or so (if you are not working) and also to volunteer as needed, which is very seldom. Our established grower, Pauline, calls me every-other week with her availability and I email (or call) members by Thursday. Orders need to be back to me by Sunday at 12:00. We pick up at UU between 3:00 – 4:30; if you aren’t able to pick up then, let me know and we can make arrangements. Payment should be made by check or exact cash and members are asked to bring their own bags. When you join, you will receive instructions. Currently we have about 22 “units” that order.
About our growers:
We have been receiving vegetables (greens) from Pauline Copello
for almost two years. She and her family all pitch in – they live on ten acres in Barberville with about two under cultivation. She grows organically and sells to Love’s Whole Foods, Noah’s Market and several Ormond high-end restaurants. Her produce is top rate, triple-washed and stays fresh for up to two weeks.
Nize Nylen and her family have 18 acres in the heart of DeLand. She grows just wonderful, unusual vegetables/citrus/edible flowers and also offers sprouts, landscape plants, free-range chicken and duck eggs, herbs, soaps, etc. Her site is plantedearthvegetables@gmail.com – if you would like to get her availability list, request her newsletter. She does not deliver.
What’s New?
Here are several local “U-PICK-YOUR-OWN” produce farms close by:
The Blueberry Farm, Leroy Foreman, East SR 44, New Smyrna Beach, (386) 228-0014. Picking now (?) through end of May. Call ahead for directions and ripeness.
William Smith, 245 Spring Street, DeLand, (386) 985-4474. Looks like May is his best season for blueberries and peaches – I suggest calling ahead.
Stay tuned, as Pastor Bud would say. I’ll have recipes using Pauline’s greens, legislative action that we need to respond to, other resources that you may have interest in.
