2009 EVENTS
• 2nd Annual Universal Birthday Party, Saturday, February 21st
Last year over 40 people of all ages joined in the fun! We shared a piece of yummy cake & ice cream, and played board games & more! Come and join us this year as we celebrate our birthdays while making some UU connections.
• RE Spring Planting/Healthy Children, Healthy Planet, Sunday, April 5th
Terri Kolaska will be helping our children help plant the spring "crop". Kids will play afterwards while parents meet for the next session of Healthy Kids, Healthy Planet. The focus of our next discussion will be “Time and Creativity”. We will serve a pizza lunch, so please plan to stay late.
• Family Egg Dying & Friendly Food Can Hunt, Sunday, April 12th
In recognition of Easter Sunday and the approaching season of Spring, we are planning to dye eggs in RE class. Also, in lieu of hiding eggs, we plan to hide canned/dry foods and then donate them to Halifax Urban Ministries. Please bring a small donation of two or three food items and leave them in the RE classrooms or the sanctuary before the service. We will use them for a fun activity and then donate them to this worthy cause.
• Earth Day Celebration, Saturday-Sunday, April18th-19th
Please plan to attend the Earth Day program at Washington Oaks on Saturday, April 18 or Sunday, April 20th. UUSDBA will have several tables at our booth. One will include children’s activities, including our now traditional solar s’mores. This event is both fun and educational. So, please mark your calendars and plan to join the Green Sanctuary Committee.
• Let’s “STAND FOR PEACE” on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10th
Our children will be part of a national celebration honoring a famous UU, Julia Ward Howe. Please join us at noon as we help restore the holiday to her original intent: A day to promote peace & speak out against war! Kids will draw messages of peace on our UUS sidewalks as adults look on... and then together we will pause to recognize the importance of peaceful means.
To learn more about “Stand for Peace” visit: http://juliasvoice.org/
• Pennies for Pancakes, Sunday, May 10th
Please join us at hospitality hour as the children serve pancakes for pennies. RE children will attend the service for the story for all ages… slip back into RE and use griddles to make pancakes for all of UU… and then, serve the tasty hot cakes during hospitality hour. Suggested donation is pennies (and more, if you’d like) to support peaceful efforts in our community. This time the collection will be used for purchases made to support Caring Through Sharing, a local non-profit organization which is dedicated to eliminating hunger as well as promoting stabilization of families. Their motto: "To Feed the Hungry One Family at a Time". And your pennies will contribute to this initiative.
• Children will sing with the choir on Sunday, June 14th!
Kids please report early to warm up your voices ... We will sing:
Enter Rejoice & Come In, Come Sing a Song With Me, and Spirit of Life.
Afterwards kids will head back to RE for a yummy ice cream treat!

• Soup & Sandwich, Sunday, July 12th (Culmination for Camp Eco-Action)
The Camp Presentation will take place during our Story for All Ages with the Galleria after the service. Campers will make Stone Soup & sandwiches and serve them to the congregation as they collect pennies for peace. This collection will be donated to the migrant families in Pierson.

• UU Coffee House on Friday, August 7th (Culmination for Camp Creative UU)
Our child will spend a week creating and planning for a “kids–led” UU Coffee House. Kids will develop their own creative piece for the event, as well as preparing for their role as hosts. Then, you may join us for this special event held during the usual August PotLuck. Please bring a dish to pass… and join us afterwards for a Unique Open Mic opportunity!
•Time to Plant… Sunday, October 4th
Thanks to Terri & Ed Kolaska, our garden beds are cleaned out and ready to go, and now with their assistance the RE children will plant our fall “crop”. Afterwards we’ll enjoy a pizza lunch and a cool dip in the Mann’s pool. Families & friends of RE please contact Debbie Johnson, if you’d like to join in fun.

•Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF, Sunday, October 25th
Time to bring your loose change to church again! The RE children & youth will be Trick-Or-Treating for UNICEF during the UUSDBA hospitality hour, while giving out Fair Trade chocolates to those who contribute. This is a great opportunity for us to learn more about the importance of Fair Trade and how UNICEF helps needy children around the world, while giving our youngsters a chance to parade around in costume! Afterwards families will enjoy a festive gathering for our Annual Pumpkin Carving Event. Families please arrive with a “hallowed out” pumpkin ready to carve…
•RE Begins Guest At Your Table, Sunday, November 22nd
Each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, many friends and families in UU congregations across the U.S. participate in the
tradition of Guest at Your Table. Please see our section on Social Action/Community Service to find out how this program works…
All donations are used to support our shared UU principles.
•RE Sale, Sundays, November 29th and December 6th
Throughout November our RE children, parents, volunteers, and staff will create items that bring a new meaning to the word “re-gifting”.
The kids will reuse old holiday cards, magazines, bits of lace & ribbons, scraps of fabric, etc. to make new gift bags, greeting cards & bookmarks. Paints, glitter, stamps & stickers will also add to their festive and original designs.
These holiday creations will then go on sale at UU during coffee hour on the two consecutive Sundays mentioned. All proceeds will be donated to the UUS/RE general funds.
•Holiday RE Projects, Sunday December 6th
During RE class the children & youth will be preparing for a short holiday presentation on Sunday, December 13th. Then, after the Sunday service those children over 10 will run our RE Sale shop while those under 10 yrs. old will paint the windows in the Nursery, and meeting rooms #2 & #3. Before leaving all of the RE families will be invited to help decorate our UUS tree for the holidays. Families please bring $1 per slice for pizza & plan to stay until 1 pm. If possible also bring a half dozen holiday cookies to share.
ON-GOING RE EVENTS 2008
Children’s Organic Garden
In Fall of 2008 several members of the Green Sanctuary committee joined Joel Tippin of "Salt of the Earth" in beginning a garden project for our RE children. We met at UU with shovels, rakes, hoes, garden gloves, etc. and got to work digging! Thanks to Sharon Rich who introduced us to Joel. He has experience creating community gardens. So, he brought the materials necessary to build a few raised beds. He also supplied what was needed for enriching the soil. Then, Terri & Ed Kolaska went to a local garden supply shop and purchased quite a few starter plants. There was quite a variety and she was able to buy them at wholesale price. The monies we have collected from our recycling of aluminum cans easily paid for the plants!
Then, with Terri’s help the RE kids planted our organic garden. The kids were delighted to have an excuse to “dig in the dirt” and as it turned out several seem to have “green thumbs”! Action shots follow:

PAST RE EVENTS - 2008
RE Kids at the Solar Dedication
On Sunday, March 30th 2008 our RE kids helped present the Sunday Service: “It’s Easy To Be Green”. The kids led the congregation in a pledge to the earth, sang a song related to caring for the earth, and helped lead a special mini-sermon regarding repair of our world. The service was part of the UUSDBA Green Sanctuary action plan.
Dedication of our solar panels followed this Sunday service. Officials from the City of Ormond and our Society participated in a “ribbon cutting” ceremony. Afterwards the children made Solar ‘Smores for everyone’s enjoyment and SolarFit provided rides on their solar-powered golf cart.
